Can I clear my conscience, if I'm different from the rest, do I have to run and hide? I never said that I want this, this burden came to me, and it's made its home inside.
ooc: one day I will deeply regret giving Zeph access to a jetpack, but today is not that day. | "DAY 1: THE PSYSICALITY STUDENTS HAVE NOT YET DISCOVERED THAT I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. I FEAR THE LACK OF WINGS IN A FLYING CLASS MAY BLOW MY COVER." Zeph was always texting. Even if he didn't look like he was texting, such as now, he was usually writing up messages on his phone with that weird mental link he had with electronics. For the most part, Zeph was in a really good mood. Although this was generally his default state, today was particularly special because he had finally managed to convince one of the filthy rich professors who he did encryption coding and reconnaissance for that he should be allowed to regularly borrow his jetpack. The guy never even used it anyway, he just let it sit there like some crappy art piece. Knowing that the absurdly expensive device wasn't even being used drove Zeph more nuts than usual.
And that's why, despite having no powers or experience in aerial movement whatsoever, Zephyr had transferred into a flight class today.
He knew who the professor was going to be before he even signed up but, despite his initial concerns, went through with the change anyway. Zeph hadn't actually seen him for over a decade. Hell, maybe Phoenix had forgotten all about him and Zeph could just pretend that they'd be meeting for the first time. How difficult could it possibly be?
When the professor arrived, Zeph immediately found himself despising everything about the winged hero, causing his features to twitch into an expression that was dangerously close to a scowl. Okay, maybe it'd be a little difficult. Regardless, he quickly recovered, spreading a wide, cocky grin over his face. This was normal. Everything was fine. Nothing out of the ordinary to see here. "Oi prof, ya gonna' have'ta add one to yer roster," he announced, "Zephyr Fear. The switch jus' happened this mornin' if ya didn't get the memo." |

Phoenix had a new student in his class. Of course he already knew this. In a school full of supergeniuses and tech savvy tikes, the movement of information was pretty ace. Before even leaving home that morning, Phoenix had known about his new student: some technomorph geek, Fear. Phoenix didn't do tech. How did this kid expect to fly? A jetpack?
Of course it was a bloody jetpack. Phoenix saw the clunky thing as soon as he flew onto the field. Flight classes were helf outside, regardless of the weather. How could students be expected to exercise their abilities well enough indoors? They couldn't. Besides, Phoenix liked being in the open air. He landed with a flourish (as always) only to be met with a knocker who seemed intent on disrupting his class. The Strategies of Flight class had already been going on for a couple weeks, so Phoenix had gotten to know his students pretty well. It only made the new kid with the jetpack stick out even more.
Initially, the man outright ignored Zephyr, more interested in getting his class started. "Alright, all, lets get started on warm-ups! I want all you larrikins gettin' out there like rats up a drainpipe! Go on, get crackin', kids!" Phoenix clapped a couple times to rouse the students, doing more than necessary to get them started. "Not you, Fear." Phoenix grew much more stiff as he stared over at the new student. He had already noticed the burn scars, expecting things to become terse between them very quickly. The Aussie accent was obvious, too, even if it was closer to the Americans'.
Phoenix walked over patiently with an expression that said he wasn't taking any rubbish with this kid. "Look, newbie, I don't do jetpacks. I teach flight, not tech, so why don't you go back to whatever bludger transferred you here instead of interrupting my class?" Did this kid look familiar? It was possible they had met if they were in Australia at the same time. Phoenix certainly didn't remember anyone with burn scars like that, though.

ooc: did I mention zeph MAY be a slight hypocrite | Zeph was was not a fan of being ignored, but he also wasn't a fan of reacting to things that annoyed him so others could push his buttons. Pushing people's buttons was his job.
Zeph could already tell that Phoenix wanted to talk with him separately from the way he was talking. It made logical sense to get everyone else started before addressing the anomaly... but just because it bade sense didn't mean Zeph had to approve of it. To be perfectly honest, it pissed him off. "Yeh, big surprise," he muttered to himself with a light huff. Save for that one utterance, he kept his tongue in line for the few seconds it took for the winged students to fly away to do whatever it was they did in this class.
Zeph wasn't intimidated by Phoenix's expression or in any way disheartened by his words. Part of him had been expecting rejection -- and, in some odd way, even hoped for rejection. He didn't want Phoenix to agree with him. He didn't want that man to be on his side. It was so much easier to loathe someone when you could disagree and fight with them. "Fuck that," he replied curtly. "Maybe you don't teach tech, but the tech profs don't teach flight. Yer a deadhead if ya think there's enough cashed up pricks goin' here to have a class for these pieces a' overpriced scrap--" Zeph whacked the side of the jetpack with the back of his hand, "Even the bloke I got 'er from doesn't know shit about flyin' it other than movin up-down-left-right. I ain't lookin' for someone t' tell me how to work this thing, I got that covered, I'm lookin' t' see what types of moves would make 'er useful."
If it had been anyone else, Zeph would have been smiling, but right now his lips formed a neutral line. How dare this high-and-mighty glorified pigeon think he was too idiotic to consider other classes and alternatives. How dare this pyrokineticist think that his class was too good for someone without wings. The fucking power-bigoted prick... |

With narrowed eyes and crossed arms, Phoenix let the kid have his bit. With an attitude like that, there was no way he was getting in on this class. At least not today. The points he made were fair, but Phoenix was not letting someone into his class if they couldn't even muster up the tiniest bit of respect. This ass was even rude about his own professors--the ones who had given him the damn tech in the first place. The ones, Phoenix assumed, he worked with most often. If he was that disrespectful toward superiors he should probably like, then there would certainly need to be a change in behavior before Zephyr got to participate.
"Get off my field. You can come back tomorrow if you're not bein' such a yobbo. Or there's always flight club after class if you stop buyin' tickets to yourself soon enough." It wasn't even worth a heated argument. Phoenix just wanted this kid out, and he could return when he wasn't being an asshole. |

▼ NOW | let's make it loud, let's show 'em all how you move to this phenomenon |
What, did this prick think that he was teaching a high school class? Zeph wasn't going to just walk away from this field with his tail between his legs that easily, especially after being called a yobbo to his face. He wouldn't have minded the disrespect normally, since he had shown the haughty seagull none, but disrespect topped with being kicked out was a step over the line. Zephyr honestly didn't even know if it had been the curses peppered throughout his speech or his general state of insubordination which was to blame for his would-be-professor's rejection. At this point, Zeph didn't care. If there had been any rational thought behind his actions before, it was gone now. Instead of appearing angry, Zeph appeared disturbingly calm about this turn of events. By rule of thumb, if Zeph was calm, that meant a storm was about to hit. Grinning, he simply replied "Yeh, nah, got places t'be after class. Flight club ain't happenin'." He put one strap of the jetpack over his shoulder as if to carry it away, but then he put the other arm through the second strap... "I'll gladly get off your field, though. Don't mind me. Carry on." The jetpack hummed to life as Zeph spoke, causing his feet to hover a few inches off the field. If this professor was going to treat him like some high school delinquent, he was going to act like one. Without another word, the machine zipped sideways, not going any higher than a foot above the turf, bringing Zeph closer to the center of the field.
