”never let them take the light behind your eyes"

MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | There were days where Joshua couldn’t help but wonder if he’d made the right choice in his current career. A teacher? A college professor no less. Molding the minds of students barely younger than he was. The ginger giant leaned back in the wooden bench and stretched his long arms across the back. Currently he was on break for some fresh air, though it wasn’t all fresh when a cigarette hung on your lips. So it was a smoke break but since he was cutting down, or trying to at least, this was his one and only cigarette for the break. And with one last flick of ash and a final breath of smoke, it was spent.
So after crushing the smoldering bit and tossing it away he was left with his thoughts. Watching the students walk by brought up the current line of questioning about his career. It was certainly different than his last two jobs. Calmer than storming the battlefield and less morally confusing than healing both sides in the fight of ‘good vs. evil’. Or at least it usually was. Sometimes these kids were worse, Joshua could easily name a few that would cause him to lose his passive nature. Yet he’d managed to hold onto it as best he could. Which made him question why he decided to take the position two years ago.
Was it the availability? The promise of feeling fulfilled? Like he was making a difference? Something he didn’t really get when he was healing heroes and villains under a tight contract. Perhaps he was just trying to relive his earlier years in the army, when everything was so simple and he actually felt like he was doing thing. Yet when he didn’t trust his own emotions how could he be so sure that what he was feeling was true? Which brought him back to why he did this and the only answer that made any sort of sense.
It was the right thing to do.
And growing up with an army father who taught him the difference between right and wrong and honor and duty. Joshua couldn’t help it. He tipped his head back and closed his eyes, his mind wandering like the footsteps of curious freshmen across the campus.

A pile of papers she wasn't sure she would ever get done in her lifetime. Mind you with an infinite lifetime that amounted to a large amount... exaggerated but still it was quite a bit for so early in the semester. Maybe she gave to much? That couldn't be it... the students much just be overachievers... or trying to spite her with huge papers. Well at least they were doing some work. They weren't wasting their lives entirely. That was always a good thing. Right?
She stopped for a five minute break after about the fifteen gagillionth paper. There was a bench near the building where she could sit outside and have a small snack. She sat her bag down next to the bench and ate a small apple. At least she had worn a light sundress and sandals today to match the weather. It was not super hot outside but it was warm enough that she was glad for her choice of wardrobe despite how cold it could get inside the building. It was quiet out... the young woman watching as a few people passed by on their walks across campus thus far. Some she recognized, some she didn't. She had gotten used to that.
She could feel a weight on the bench beside her as someone else had sat down... a man who she was familiar with due to teachers meetings and Fight Club. She just gave a simple hello and continued to bite at her fruit. She had given herself a half an hour time slotted for a break before the next class she was forced to teach. It wasn't that she didn't care about the students or thought what she was doing was pointless. It was just tiring and frustrating... especially realizing that she had several lifetimes of practice in control and many of these young people didn't (and would never) have that luxury. Some people's abilities did impress her though she had to admit that. Joshua was one of the naturally.
"You smell like smoke," she said more to herself than to the teacher sitting next to her. She could smell the stink of it on him. Death sticks. She had seen it many times... people who used it to escape something or take something off their mind. She had 20 minutes left to 'dawdle' before being drawn back to work. Sometimes she wondered why she came back to civilization. The thoughts quickly left her though as solitary life was not all it was cracked up to be. The blonde pushed her hair back behind her ears as she sat on the bench with the healer.

”never let them take the light behind your eyes..."
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | Drifting a bit in his head Joshua forgot that there was someone else on the bench with him. Turning his head he opened one green eye and looked at the fellow professor who was most definitely not the age she appeared to be. Miss Echo Walsh, a mysterious woman who he had gotten to know over the past two years in quiet company and the unruly Fight Club he’d been forced to join. Though he knew little about her past she knew little of his, there were no prying questions between them in conversations. That wasn’t how their sort of friendship worked.
”That’ll happen when you’re a smoker,” he replied to the small woman’s observation. “I’d light up another one but I’m trying to cut down,” Joshua sighed at his body craving more nicotine than he’d supplied. Lifting his head back up he watch people pass by with tired eyes. When was his next class again? Ten minutes from now? Twenty? Probably twenty.
He reached a gloved hand up and scratched the back of his head, “You ever wonder why you became a teacher?” Joshua suddenly asked as his green eyes followed students back and forth as they passed by. Normally he wasn’t so impulsive but he was rather curious as to why Echo became a teacher. Did she share the same view as him? Did she think it was the ‘right’ thing to do?
“I don’t mean to be intrusive, of course, but I’ve been wondering why I thought it was a good idea for me to be molding the minds of impressionable kids and the only reason I can come up with just sounds too simple to be the answer.” Joshua looked over at the blonde with an impassive face though some curiosity flickered across his eyes.

Maybe it was a male thing? She could never understand men. In her time they did the same thing... though when she was young people had little idea the harm it caused on the living body. This man had the amazing power to heal though so maybe this point was null and void for him. She didn't really understand how his powers worked. It was probably one of those things she just wasn't meant to know. She had gotten used to that.
"Why did I became a teacher?" she repeated the question. Her answer was probably the simplest one. She wasn't as compassionate as she once was. All the death surrounding her and the emotional ties she knew wouldn't last took their toll on a person. She looked at the odd man... a little curious where this question came from. She was no mind reader sadly which would certainly help. In all their dealings together she rarely had an actual conversation with him besides about work. They weren't the sort of people who chit chatted about their lives or made small talk really even.
"Because I was asked," she said, tilting her head to look up at the tall man with a raised brow. He stammered on about something she didn't really seem to care about. She knew they were all chosen to be here. All the professors here was talented she could no deny that. In fact some surprised her with how talented they were with their gifts despite how much shorter they had to work on training them than she did. Then again she had nobody with her for a long while.
"Everyone here is here for a reason. If it was a good idea for you to be here or not I cannot say..." Echo trailed off with that. Everything happened for a reason. She was here because she needed to be. She had no idea why all she had was this feeling deep down that she should be here. She was certain everyone else had that same feeling. Someday she hoped to know why. She was patient... after all she had all the time in the world. A luxury others did not have.
