brushing pollen off the faux fur along his jacket luuk regretted buying the flowers.
it's not as if the cemetery lacked them; at that thought luuk eyed the eric evers memorial. bouquets and wreathes were already piling along the side of the stone by noon. something he'd rarely seen before. just the kind of events that happen while you're incarcerated: dramatic deaths of beloved heroes. big but tacky deaths and, apparently subsequently, memorials. but luuk was there for something a little more low key. he made an attempt trying to be low key anyway. wearing a coat that isn't made of a dead animal. jeans. visiting on a tuesday when he knew it'll be emptier.
not empty enough, though. he wasn't there for long before luuk saw someone he would rather not there, if ever. his natural reaction wanted to be a sneer, something to baring teeth, but growling in a cemetery while clutching a bouquet in your standard is not behaviour luuk wanted to accept from himself.
the flowers are glanced down on briefly before he withdraws his hands behind his back in a speed, fairly convincing gesture. it's bizarre, unconvincing, but he knew if she saw she'd… she'd assume something. and he assumed whatever she assumed was unassumably bullshit. and he was being petty but luuk was well-acquainted feeling just petty. he knew she was being the same. and madame zephyr would have to learn that now they were working alongside each other.
luuk whistled to her on both the off chance she hadn't noticed him already and to drill something like, he didn't know, they were both there and there wasn't any escape this time. he almost wanting to swear at the flowers behind his back, was split between hiding flowers and taunting her. he'd go with taunting. horrible, retired taunting he swear he hadn't done since superheroes had been nagging him. it was terrible. plus he still had those flowers, “out for a walk zeph?”

It was a calm day in the cemetery. They were usually rather deserted places, save for the plethora of tombstones, and the quietness was a blessing to Cassie's frazzled mind. Sure, she could still hear the city noises, but that was a low rumble to her now after living her entire life in the city.
While cemeteries were never happy places, Cassie felt peaceful here. She'd never admit that it was because everyone here had already passed, and that there were no timers that she could see, no timers that would constantly bombard her with guilt.
She was sitting on a bench near a grave she knew well. An old friend from years ago, before the explosion and before everything took a turn for the worse. A friend killed in a battle with some notorious villain. A friend that she missed dearly. If she'd had the death sense then, would she have seen when her friend was about to die? Would she have even been able to do anything to stop it? Cassie's introspection was never anything joyful anymore.
Her thoughts were jarred when she heard a whistle and a name she hadn't heard used seriously in ages. Zeph. Sure, sometimes people would jokingly refer to her as her alias and new students would sometimes murmur the name in awe when she walked in to class on the first day, but no one had actually called her that for years.
However, when she looked up to see the owner of the whistle, her stomach sank. Luuk Lyall, a man she remembered all to well, and she was sure he remembered her as well. After all, one doesn't forget the person who helped put them in jail so quickly.
"Who would choose to come for a walk here?" she responded, making her voice a bit louder so he could hear her, though she didn't want to yell in a place like this. Still, she never finished her thought, leaning a bit to the side to peer at him.
She didn't need any special vision powers to notice he was hiding something behind his back, and while she wasn't sure if approaching the topic was entirely appropriate for their relationship, she went forward with it anyways — they were coworkers now, after all. "Who are those flowers for?"
