vegas had experienced a prophetic vision.
t'was a fortuitous day that he relayed a challenge from lady fate herself to his companions! blessed be they in that her request was kind and virtuous, her demand simple as it entailed one thing and one thing only: ice skating.
actually, one other thing: this ice-skating had to take place at central park because julio had never been before and, obviously, because lady fate had commanded it so. and if the others didn't hurry up vegas might have to resort to receiving a further, even more vivid prophetic vision to remind them of the sacred duty that awaited them on the ice. he needn't think he'd have to relay a message from lady fate any time soon because ice-skating was glorious – what reason did they have to delay starting?
already on the rink, and already maintaining his balance on skates, at least julio showed an awareness of ice-skating and verily more know-how than he had in camping, possibly on the basis he hadn't assumed ice-skates were some form of high-tech technology just yet. he'd been leading just as he had before but had quickly trumped ahead and he'd broken away from the three others as soon as he'd seen a chance but now there was one other goal in mind: unite the chosen disciples with the ice!
and with them here he had an announcement to make! turning back to the others at the barrier, he grinned to them and, of course, took to a pose, “behold!” though he seemed discontent, looking down on himself for a second. unzipping the warm winter jacket, he was much more content after that. for he may have had to sacrifice a sworn vengeance against sleeves in the harrowingly cold weather but fear not! emergency cut-off shirt. the cold weather would not stop a renowned hero from baring flesh. even if his companions had perhaps thought that the rather explicitly ripped jeans had been the extent of it that day.
with the harsh winter cold against his stomach as well as his legs needing to be ignored vegas returned his attention to his honoured companions. raising his voice, posing once again he felt comfortable to announce, “magnificent, is it not?”
“now who needs a righteous hand from vegas in conquering this frozen realm?”

it wasn't that he was clumsy. not at all. it wasn't his fault.
but if olly had one weakness, it was not being able to say no to social gatherings. even if he knew it meant making a tit of himself. taking a tumble in football was expected and laughed off, but on ice? with razor-sharp death swords laced to his feet?
he still remembered the last time he'd gone skating. his entire body had ended up one huge bruise.
so it was with trepidation that he was standing by the rink entrance, holding the side, looking down at the ice with no small degree of concern.
"didn't realise there were gonna be so many people watchin' me fall on my arse," he said, mostly directing the comment at julio. after all, the other boy was the main reason he was here. "if i accidentally kill someone, make sure you tell the police i have a condition, right?"
and slowly, nervously, he took a little baby step down onto the ice, still clutching the side. that was one skate, and then the other, and remarkably as he very carefully let go he felt somewhat stable. as long as he stood still. "this is where one of you starts doin' spins and flips and that, right?"
