| @dee1 Tap, tap, tap. The pitter-patter of fingertips decorated the desk, and Lars, in his absent-minded doodling, almost didn’t hear the professor when he announced that the class would be pairing up for a group project. The voice at the end of the room suddenly became more clear and audible, and Lars’ ears perked up like soldiers at attention when the name of his partner was revealed: Evie Aldred. Keeping his head still, he shifted his eyes to look at her for a quick second. The two of them were relative strangers and nary a word had ever been spoken between the two, but she had always seemed interesting, even if most people didn’t think she was the nicest girl around.
Certain halfs of the pairs were instructed to move from their seats and move near their partner, giving Lars the perfect initiative to make his approach. He was the first to stand up, and as such, the first to sit back down. This time next to Evie herself.
”Hey, uh, you’re Evie right?” Yes, of course she was! He wondered why he asked in the first place. Was he nervous? ”I’m Lars, but you probably already knew that.” He did some unconscious preening, quickly rubbing his hair smooth and flattening out the creases in his shirt. ”Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re a technopath, yeah? You can take a piece of hardware and understand it inside-out in a matter of seconds? I mean I only ask because… because I think that’s amazing! You gotta show me how you do it sometime. I really-”
In the corner of his eye Lars could see the professor giving him a look that said nothing but “get back on task”. And so he did. He would try to anyway. ”Well maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. At any rate it’s cool to finally meet you Evie, I'm sure this project'll turn us into the best of pals.” He scratched his cheek lightly and gave her an awkward, but honest smile, hoping he hadn’t turned her off with his enthusiasm. Not everyone could match his excitement at times. |

If someone didn't know Evie, they'd probably think she never paid attention in class at all. She always had a book or two cracked open on her desk, which she stared into with such dedication that it would intimidate the dead. However, the opposite was true - Evie was rather adept at multitasking, finding it second nature to listen to the lecture while she read.
Today was no different. She had her nose stuck between the crisp, yellow pages of some book that looked like she had stolen it from the Hogwarts library. Not a second thought was given to the students around her, not the conversations they had nor the way they would steal glances at her. Were they curious? Shocked? Unsure?
When the professor even mentioned the phrase 'pair up', Evie's head shot up to look at where he stood at the front of the room. There were only a few things Evie hated about the shift from homeschooling to a classroom studying: gum stuck under the desks, the chitchat, and group projects.
Ugh, group projects. As if her time could be wasted trying to convince the other person why her idea was clearly the best route.
The professor clearly prepared the groups ahead of time. Evie waited with held breath as he read the names off the paper. Lars Darius. Evie looked around the room at the numerous faces of her peers, trying to figure out which one was Lars Darius. She didn't have much time to think about it though, because suddenly some blonde haired kid was standing next to her spouting off a whole lot of words.
Evie looked at him with calm eyes, not a wrinkle in her face as her expression remained relaxed. He sure could talk, but... something was sort of endearing about him. His enthusiasm was almost magnetic, even to Evie.
She couldn't help but let out the smallest giggle, the corners of her mouth twitching upwards. "I am a technopath," she clarified, but that was all she was able to say before the professor gave them both a death glare.
Evie cleared her throat audibly, her face returning to a neutral state. Had she really just giggled? Strange.
"I'm sure we will," she agreed passively, "we should start immediately to ensure we're finished before the deadline."

| I DON'T EVEN KNOW/@dee1 Evie mentioned that they should start, and with that Lars put his elbows on the desk, and used his fingers to lightly stroke the three dozen or so strands of hair on his chin that made up his wannabe goatee. ”Yeah, of course. Let’s get to it!” And then a few seconds of silence went by. ”...Uhh what are we doing exactly?” That’s right, the instructor never got around to the detailing the, well… details. He just told everyone to find their partner.
Just then (of course) said instructor approached Evie and Lars, and stood in front of their desk with a box in his hand before he began speaking to the class.
”I should mention to you all that this assignment would perhaps be better categorized as an… aptitude test. Of sorts.”
The instructor proceeded to dump a number of random mechanical parts onto their shared desk, along with a thick blindfold. Lars stared at the blindfold and parts with a bemused look ”What the heck is this?” He looked up at the instructor.
”This, Mr. Darius--and Ms. Aldred--is your assignment. One of you shall be blindfolded and attempt to piece together the material in front of you, all the while being verbally directed by your partner, of whom is not allowed to touch the pieces. Basically you” he pointed at Lars ”Will be building piece blind, while you” then he pointed at Evie ”Give him directions without touching anything. Now, get to it.”
The instructor went on to pass out the rest of the materials to the other students, and literally left the pair to their own devices.
Lars grabbed the blindfold, turned to Evie with a bemused look and shrugged his shoulders.
”...Tie this for me would you?”
