Just a few days prior, Cassie had discovered a strange note in her mailbox at work. It was written in neat, block handwriting and though the all capitals gave it the air of shouting, she sincerely hoped that her colleague hadn't intended to scream.
MEET ME AT THE STADIUM ON SATURDAY MORNING, 9 AM. BRING WATER.
It was signed Rosie Levesque, and though Cassie would have to be a complete idiot to not know who that was, she wasn't very familiar with the woman outside of knowing that they were coworkers, and of Rosie's work. She was famous in the heroing world for her inventions, and it made Cassie feel like a bit of a...dullard, comparatively.
Sure, she was smart, but she wasn't an engineer or inventor or anything. All she could do was fly and apparently she did that well enough to teach students, but it wasn't like she had to think much about it.
Deciding her thoughts were too negative for so early in the morning, she stopped by a Starbucks on her way to the subway and ordered a coffee to clear her head. While there were transport stations that took her directly to the transport hub at the university, sometimes a nice long subway ride was calming, given that there were no rowdy people riding at the time.
She arrived at the stadium right on time, walking through the doors just as her phone's clock read 9:00. She sipped her coffee and looked around, hosting her bag a bit higher on her shoulder (which had a few bottles of water in it, as she had been instructed) and noticed there was nobody else around, or so it seemed.

it wasn't exactly usual for rosie to even be awake at this time at the weekend, but she'd foregone her usual trip to the downtown bars to get an early night. she'd be lying if she wasn't utterly excited, but she'd also been a little worried. first field test of potentially dangerous equipment, potential to fall horribly to her death, asking a woman she barely knew to prevent that horrible death maybe...
so she'd gotten out of bed at five, unable to sleep any longer, and it was now at the stroke of 9am that she strode out into the stadium with a wheeled case behind her. she looked set for something pretty serious - copper hair twisted into a knot behind her head, her clothing the close-fitting grey bodysuit from her costume complete with sponsorship embroidery around the high collar. the usual body armour, however, was nowhere to be seen. based on the stretching and bounces on the balls of her feet as rosie crossed the field, she was planning on doing something that required a fair bit of movement.
"mornin'!" despite not being a morning person, rosie was cheerful as ever, offering cassie a bright grin. "thanks for this, darlin', i owe ya a favor for sure." pulling up alongside cassie she knelt down to open the case, revealing carved foam packing nestled neatly around an array of glossy metallic equipment. rosie's - sonique's - sonic gauntlets, and a skeletal setup of wires and cannibalised motors and circuitboards in a makeshift perspex case.
"soooo, i've been workin' on somethin'. you guys can fly no prob, but i've been thinkin' crowd control might be a l'il more effective if i was more mobile. i just wanna do a couple test runs, but obviously there are gonna be a couple issues if i'm thirty feet up and it all goes wrong."

It wasn't long after she arrived that she heard Rosie's southern drawl echo out through the stadium, bouncing off the rafters. For a sports stadium this place had pretty good acoustics, or so she thought, anyways. Looking back at the woman she offered her a slight nod and a curt smile in greeting.
"Morning," she responded, though it was a slight afterthought before taking another sip of coffee, just before shaking her head at Rosie's quip that she owed her. It's not like Cassie had anything planned for the morning and she was more than willing to help out...though after her colleague described just what would be happening, her stomach fell a bit.
She was responsible for keeping someone else alive? This was a turn for the worse, or so it seemed. A quick glance above Rosie's head proved that there was still quite a bit of time left, so nothing was going to go wrong. That put her at ease, but she still was fidgeting a bit at the thought. Hopefully Professor Levesque thought that was just a side-effect of early-morning caffeine.
"Er, right," she said, nodding a bit. Draining her coffee cup she stuffed that in her bag, as the nearest trash was a little ways away and she wasn't about to litter, obviously. The bag in question slid off of her shoulder and she set it on the ground gingerly. Flying in these clothes would be strange, as she was used to flying in a spandex superhero suit — for aerodynamics, of course — but then again, she didn't know that she was going to be taking flight this morning.
Looking back up at the fiery-haired professor, she awaited further instructions quietly, trying to quell the nerves that were rising in her throat.

she didn't exactly look happy, but this was cassie - rosie didn't know the woman well at all, but she knew about madame zephyr's reputation for seriousness. then again, it was 9am. she'd be grumpy too.
busying herself with pulling on all the equipment with practiced ease, she shot cassie a smile. "you look a l'il nervous, hon. relax, i'm pretty sure this is gonna run smooth..." standing, she pulled the perspex case on like a backpack, fastening the straps over her shoulders and across her chest and abdomen. the entire setup was a little heavy, but it was comfortable - she was used to the body armour of her suit, after all, and she was fit. "what'd'you think? looks a l'il messy now, but once i've done tests i'll get it all shiny and lookin' nice. 'til then, just gotta get her flyin'."
powering up the device, obviously a jetpack of sorts, rosie gave a pleased little hum at the high-pitched whine of the warm-up sequence. "so how're you doin'? had a good night?"

Cassie stood there, albeit a bit awkwardly, while Rosie prepared her equipment. She had her gauntlets, of course, the technology she had become insanely famous for. And then she pulled on a sort of backpack-looking thing. The pink-haired professor didn't really know what any of the things really did, adding more to her insecurity and how unsure she was of all of this.
Looking up when she heard the other woman's voice again, Cassie realized she must have been showing just how nervous she was about all of this. Dammit. Most days she could keep her resolve and her expression was usually set to stony...but she'd never really been asked to do anything like this before, and with her newfound ability it wasn't really keeping her settled.
"Oh, sorry," she sighed and scratched the back of her neck, the tip of her ponytail tickling her wrist. Then again, Rosie had only said she was pretty sure this would go alright. How could she be so nonchalant about the fact that something could malfunction and she could get seriously hurt — or killed?
When the other woman asked how the getup looked, she nodded a bit. It wasn't really the response that made sense, but Cassie's thoughts were a bit preoccupied with worry. When Rosie attempted small talk a bit later, she was uncharacteristically anxious as to what she should say.
"Oh, er. Yeah, just a boring night at home," she said, clearing her throat. "I had to get up early, after all, so..."
