When he received the message to meet her by the College of Elements, a sense of foreboding urged him to ignore it and just stay in his room. Besides, he was halfway finished sewing up a stuffed eagle, and he had promised himself that its completion would remain number one on his list of priorities.
But sometimes priorities changed. This was Riley he was talking about, and if he wanted to spend his days in peace, sacrifices must be made to accommodate her sporadic behavior. Now, looming over him was the most unattractive piece of architecture on campus. The structure cast its wide shadow over him as he tilted his head, getting a full glimpse from bottom to top.
Slung over his shoulder was a light backpack, containing a few books, pens and on the bottom, Claude the Zebra. As if he would leave the dorm without a plushie to calm his nerves! Still, the decision to bring him along was risky, if not completely insane. He cast a sideways glance toward the one who initiated the meeting.
He suddenly regretted coming.
“Do I have to guess why we’re here?” he coughed, impatiently shifting his balance to either foot. Assuming the worst was always his first reaction, and this time was no exception. He somehow managed to fight back the urge to call 911 before it was too late. “Because I really hope it’s just to admire the architecture.”

Shielding her eyes with one hand and the other on her hip, Riley peered up at the Liu College of Elements. Though others may have considered the building an eyesore, to her, the building held exciting possibilities. All the ledges, grooves, and dimples on the surface looked as though they would make for good footholds if one were to ever attempt to scale the building. And that was just what she intended to do.
Though under normal circumstances she might have attempted the feat alone, Riley had decided to include Yaron for several reasons. For one thing, Yaron was, like her, powerless. She had to admit that she enjoyed his company more because of it. After all, it was nice to have someone else normal around, instead of feeling constantly overshadowed by someone with powers. As for the second reason, she couldn't very well run for help herself if she broke both her legs falling, now, could she?
Lowering her hand, Riley turned her attention to Yaron. She rolled up her sleeves, grinning. "Oh, we're gonna admire it, all right. In fact, I'd bet after this, you'll have a whole new appreciation for architecture."
Stepping towards the building, she gave it another inspection before grabbing at a ledge that was very nearly out of reach. Hauling with all her might, she managed to get her elbows on the ledge before pulling the rest of herself up. The ledge was wide enough to stand on-- barely. Riley knelt down, holding out a hand as though she intended for Yaron to take it so she could help haul him up.
"Drop that bag and come on up," she said, "it'll be fun! Or are you scared?" She added with a teasing grin.

Under what circumstances did an appreciation for structural design require familiarization with its nooks and crannies? Seriously though, this was dumb. Judging by the setup of the building, there was no way he was going to make it past five feet off the ground. Athletics? Please, he had stuffed animals war machines to assemble (not that he’d ever use them in war, of course).
He stood frozen in his spot as the girl struggled to heave herself onto the first ledge. That girl could put the nimblest of monkeys to shame. Shaking his head, he approached the ledge and eyed the hand that would send him to his death. “No ropes? No helmet?” This girl was clearly not thinking straight. “You’re sober, right?”
Yet that final comment was enough to ruffle his feathers. Just because he chose not to endanger his wellbeing didn’t mean he couldn’t. Really, getting to the top didn’t appear to be much of a challenge after taking a second glance at it. A resolute expression on his face, he dropped his bag to the side and grabbed hold of her hand to pull himself up.
And that was the most agonizing ten seconds he’d spent in his entire existence.
He leaned back against the building as he took a moment to catch his breath. That’s it, he was done. “How about I take the elevator and meet you up there?” he proposed with a wry laugh. A glance upward told him that there was no way in hell he was climbing that distance.
“Are you sure you wanna do this? Besides, you don’t exactly... ” he pressed. Without safety equipment, one misstep would mean the end, and it wasn’t like she had a power to rely on if it happened. “I mean, if you could fly or something, that’d be great, but—” Okay, dangerous territory approaching. He hastily shut his mouth before his rambling worsened the situation.

As she watched Yaron approach the ledge cautiously, Riley couldn't help but laugh at his words. "Of course I'm sober," she said, though her voice was strained as she pulled back on Yaron's hand to counter his weight. "No way I'd do this drunk. It wouldn't be as fun."
With her companion safely beside her on the ledge, she stood and examined the building as it stretched above them, searching for their next route. Her hands moved over the face of the wall, feeling for the best spot to grab hold of. "You sound pretty eager to get out of this. Got somewhere to be, Yaron?" She asked jokingly and with a grin, not looking away from the building.
...until he brought up her powerlessness. Riley slowly turned her head to look at her companion, her smile gone. For a moment, she considered pushing him off the ledge. After all, they had not yet ascended very far, and he would probably survive the drop. Probably. "Oh, what, and you can?" She growled coldly. Glaring at him a moment longer, she finally turned back towards the wall. "Come on."
This was no longer about having fun. Immature as it was, for her it had become about proving she could do it, powers or not. Riley grabbed at a crevice in the building, her feet finding purchase as she pulled against the makeshift handhold, hauling herself higher and reaching for the next cranny. In this manner, she continued to climb until she reached the next ledge, three feet up.
She only slipped once.
Completely out of breath, Riley turned to glare down at her companion. Her voice was strained with the beginnings of fatigue as she issued her challenge. "Are you coming or not?"
