With her arms crossed and her backpack leaning against her side, Riley sat in the subway car as it rattled along. Her eyes were narrowed and her jaw set as she glanced around at the fellow subway-goers. It was apparent from her body language that she was not happy, and the reason was easy enough to discern.
Riley was lost.
Though she now regretted the decision, she had chosen to visit the Statue of Liberty on one of her free days. After all, it was practically criminal to visit New York and not see one of the country's most recognizable landmarks. So she had seen it, and she had started to head back to Vireximus' campus... or so she thought. In reality, she had been heading in circles around Manhattan.
The subway screeched to a halt. Riley grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulders, shoving her way to the front of the queue to leave the car. As soon as she was out, she stared at the giant, backlit map of the city that was erected on the wall. Why was this New York shit so confusing? Boroughs and subways and other stupid things that had been severely lacking in the small town of Pine City, Minnesota where she had grown up.
Riley sighed, tearing her gaze away from the confusing map. She ascended the stairs that led to the street, emerging outside and glancing around in frustration. Darkness was beginning to fall over the city. People weaved around her as she stood like a statue at entrance to the underground. In agitation, Riley muttered to herself, "Where the fuck am I...?"

Believe it or not, Eli isn't that far off from Riley's situation. Just a few hours ago, the boy left the campus and visit some shops over in cannel street. He over heard a few people in the past week speak about their shops selling pet turtles for soup. The idea of it was kind of weird, but not totally unheard of. He saw some stranger things in the discovery channel back when he used to baby sit. It still intrigued him enough to make an adventure out of it. With the help of a few of his friends, he managed this way from the school grounds to his destination.
It was rather dazzling and a fun experience for the boy. Managed to smell a lot of strange smells and see all sorts of different products at the market placeless along with imitations. It was fun, though a little worrisome after separating from his friends for a while too look around better. He never did manage to regroup with them again, and the later the day got, the more the city changed. At that point Eli didn't want to stick around. He slithered his way through the crowds of people and slipped into the hot subways. At first he thought he hopped into the right track, the number was right and all the labels directed him in the right road. However, he stepped into the track leading him the exact opposite direction.
From that point on, he's been struggling through, transferring from track to track, only getting himself more lost. He wonders aimlessly and unsure if he should step into another track or not. With a discouraging sigh, the boy agrees on a break away from the stuffy station, making way for the exit. As he steps up into the streets, he finally smiles again from the relief of feeling a cool breeze against his skin. By no longer having to feel over heated, he dives his hands into his zipped up hoodie.
His eyes glance around the tall buildings, wondering for what or who they belong to. As his mind starts to drift as do his body, moving on its own with the crowds and crossing streets at the same time as the masses. Through his mindless exploring, he eventually finds a lead. His eyes land on a sign showing familiar subway lines that he used to get to his earlier destination.
"Oh, is that where I need to go?"
Eli starts making his way to an entrance, ignoring wether it's leading in the right directing aside from being the right line. He's too excited to care though, diving head first for the stair way. And just as soon as he turns towards the railing and steps, his body slams into a stranger, nearly knocking her down the path. His hands sub-coniously latches on to one of her arms after seeing her swaying motion. It looked like she was really about to fall. It would have been very bad for the boy if she did too.
"Oh god. Oh man I'm-I'm really sorry about that."
Eli frantically looks up to the stranger which he foolishly bumped into. Not realizing his actions, the boy's hand still laches onto the girl's arm. He waves around his free one while desperately looking apologetic. He didn't mean for any of it to happen, it just did which seems to be a common thing for him. His dark eyes then focus on the stranger's face, quickly noticing that she's not entirely a stranger after all.
"He-hey, you're that girl. Oh my god no, I mean to say you a girl I've seen on campus! Uh, in a Vireximus."
It's nice seeing a somewhat familiar face, especially after being long for a while now. Though somehow slightly knowing the person only made the situation more rude in the guy's mind. Feeling guilty for not realizing sooner along with actually being so absent minded to not notice a person is walking in front of him, in a city full of people.
"Oh man, I really am sorry about this just now."

Riley considered going back down the stairs to look at the map again, but decided against it. She could stare at that stupid thing for hours and it wouldn't help her. Maybe she should just start looking for landmarks? Yeah, that seemed like a good plan. After all, the Liu College of Elements was an eyesore. Surely she'd be able to spot that place from a mile off, at the least.
With a mental shrug, Riley started to head off... only to have someone slam into her. A short, sharp gasp escaped her, and for a moment she swayed almost comically, teetering on the first step of the stairs into the underground. She felt a moment of panic, her thoughts filled with curses and profanities. She surely would have toppled down the stairs, too, were it not for the boy-- the same one who had bumped into her in the first place!-- grabbing her arm and steadying her.
Riley was silent for a moment, glaring at the boy as he sputtered an apology. He was still holding her arm, and with relish she ripped it away, perhaps hoping to convey some of her anger in the motion. Not that it was needed; her next words were more than enough to make her opinion on the situation known.
"And you're that boy, the one who nearly broke my neck!" She spat back at him. Riley continued to glare at the boy, taking in his dark eyes and hair. So he went to Vireximus, too? Now that she thought about it, he did look familiar. She must have seen him around campus. If that was the case, he must have known the way back! She couldn't help but grin slightly at her luck. At least someone useful had crashed into her.
Her smile was quick to vanish as she adjusted the straps of her backpack.
"It's fine," she said, though there was a slight grumble to her voice. He looked sorry enough, but that didn't fully excuse his carelessness. "Just watch where you're going."
Riley continued to gaze at the boy thoughtfully, wondering how she could convince him to tell her how to get back to campus without admitting she was lost. She supposed she could just follow him, but that was risky, as it was getting dark and with his dark hair, he would be easy to lose in the crowded city.
"So... Vireximus, huh?" She eventually said, as casually as she could. "You heading back there now? We could go together. You know, for, uh, safety," she improvised quickly, though she soon realized that was a stupid excuse to travel together. If this boy was indeed attending Vireximus, the odds were astronomically high that he had super powers and would not need safety in numbers, even at night in New York. Well, she supposed that was just too bad for him. He had nearly sent her sprawling down the stairs and now she was going to make sure he made up for it by escorting her back to campus, whether he liked it or not.

Eli looks away in shame of his actions. By being completely absorbed in his desperate search back to school he did nearly hurt the woman. That much he can't argue. It's a bit unbearable for him, and even though his classmate rudely expresses her feelings, the boy feels no ill towards her as it's all true.
From averting his eyes, he missed the woman's off looking smile. He only looks up once the other said, "It's fine." It seems as if he's forgiven which is a good sign for him after the short outburst.
"Yes of course."
The boy's dark eyes start gazing into the bright blue eyes of the woman before him as she gazes back. His head almost cocks to the side as the tries to think of a way to excuse himself to leave. He doesn’t want to risk forgetting the directions in his mind. Being lost isn’t the best feeling in the world though he’s blessed with the patience of a saint which prevents him from panicking.
His classmate speaks before he could. Asking him about something that he was in fact actually doing.
”Oh uh yeah, I’m heading back right now.”
His eyes drift down to the stairway then back to his classmate, starting to wonder if he’s heading the wrong direction. Based on the way her body was facing, she was definitely leaving the station. Maybe she was leaving it to transfer to a different train? Though wouldn’t it be easier to do underground? Not that Eli would know how.
His mind then drifts into a different direction. Thinking that maybe it’s because he mentioned he’s from Vireximus that the somewhat familiar classmate feels inclined to help him back to campus. He does look pretty weak and easy to take advantage of. Actually, he is pretty weak and easy to take advantage of. Upperclassmen and other in his own class drag his ass out of his room to strange places all the time. And the worst part is, he’s absolutely okay with it.
Eli starts to feel bad now. He’s not sure if he’s ending the girl’s day of fun by intruding on her the way he did. He probably ruined her good mood with the hefty shove he gave her. It’s understandable though, can easily make someone feel jumpy.
”But ah, seriously, I’m sorry about all that.”
His arm moves up to his neck, rubbing back and forth between the collar of his hoodie and the nape of his hair. The action helps to relieve him a little of the shame. He probably won’t forget what had just happened till tomorrow, or even later than that. His mind is just so easy to run in circles on one topic. Thankfully his mind is still running a bigger concern in the back of his mind, bringing it back up in his last few words.
"Anyway, I was heading down there, but if you know a better way, since your walking out of the station and all."

When the young man confirmed that he was attending Vireximus and that he was, indeed, on his way back to campus, Riley couldn't help but let out a small sigh of relief. She was so relieved to have a way back to Vireximus, in fact, that when he apologized again, she merely waved it off.
"Really, it's no big deal! You just scared me, is all."
When he continued to look ashamed, even rubbing the back of his neck, Riley grimaced impatiently and was about to say something when he caught her off-guard with his next words. Shit! Was she going the wrong way? Shit shit shit shit--
"Oh, I was just, er, coming up for some air," she invented quickly, shrugging as casually as she could. "You know how muggy those subway cars can get. But, let's go... what was your name again? I'm Riley, by the way." After a pause, she added, "Riley Tuff."
At first, she had wondered whether giving out her last name was wise. Not because of so-called 'stranger danger'-- no, she was far beyond being scared of this young man-- but because she was sick and tired of being asked about her superhero parents. But, she had decided that the chances that he was from Pine City, even Minnesota, were slim to none, and so there was no danger in giving out her full name.
Riley turned and headed back down into the underground, glancing over her shoulder to make sure the young man was following her. Once at the bottom, she turned to gaze at the map on the wall. For a moment, she tried again to puzzle out its meaning, but eventually gave up and glanced hopefully at her companion.
"So... which route do you usually take?"

Seeing as the issue earlier was easily let go, Eli's able to glance and analyze the stranger with a neutral expression. Strangers bump the two's shoulders as they walk by the street. The crowd grew less as the passengers of a train that had likely arrived that moment have already left leaving the corner to be a bit more relaxed.
"Nice to meet you Riley Tuff."
It words rolled off short from his mouth as it felt more awkward rather than nice, especially with what could have happened. He still feels a bit at fault about it, if only he hadn't been so careless. Then again the almost disastrous encounter gave the boy an opportunity to meet with what he thinks is his savior.
"I'm Eli Maddox."
His eyes follow the classmate closely, so not to lose sight of her as she heads down the steps. The air's stiff and muggy with the thick sent of sweat and a hint of sewage and metal. There didn't seem to be many people now waiting bellow, just a few who happened to have missed the previous train. As the two slide their cards to enter, Riley turns to ask her questions.
Eli pauses. Though his blank expression hides his shock, the boy runs in circles like a dog chasing its tail in trying to figure he isn't to sure exactly where. He remembers the signs where green at some point on his trip down which is what drew him to this station.
"Uh green, I mean a 4, 5, or 6 train."
Eli dips his hands deep into the pockets of his hoodie to fiddle with his fingers as he skims around. His eyes reach up reading an electronic sign stating the next train's arrival. They have five minutes before a 6 train heading uptown arrives.
"One is coming in a few minutes actually. It...should take us straight there."
The boy slightly tilts his head with a bit of uncertainty. He remembers being on a single train for a long period of time and then transferring with the group he came. Possibly twice, but with all the hoping around he's done he's sure this one will take them all the way (and not the bronx cause that's where they're heading). After a few minutes of breathing in the strange hot air, the rails ring as the train eases in and readies to open it's doors.
