I’m drowning!!! was what popped into her head before she burst into a fit of giggles. Of course she wasn’t drowning! The water was inside the glass, silly! Just like those majestic beasts. The blunette, enchanted by the gelatinous form that was an 8-legged creature, pressed her face against the octopus tank. Her gaze was locked on the floating figure on display, following its epic journey from one side of the tank to the other.
“I believe in you!” she encouraged in an urgent whisper. As the cephalopod drew closer to its destination, Senic’s cheering grew louder and more exuberant. Her voice resounded off the glass and caused a number of visitors to glance her way. Some even cast her glares that failed to faze the overexcited university student, as she was currently hopping up and down and squealing in glee.
The octopus had finally reached the other side. It had triumphed over the rocks and coral with the dignity of a king, a bulbous king. She brought her hands together in short, quick claps to celebrate the end of this momentous occasion. To spread word of its victory, she turned to grab the shoulder of the nearest visitor.
“Did you see that?!” Her face revealed nothing but admiration for the octopus. “That was so INSPIRING! Don’t you think so?”

Saline air on her tongue, musky brine in her lungs. Ashelia inhaled, reveling in the Atlantean atmosphere of the aquarium. Having lived by the sea in her childhood, many of her fondest memories hummed to the gentle swish of the tide against sand. Dark rooms, late nights, and early mornings under homemade quilts being lulled to sleep by the surf. No wonder, then, that second to Leon’s arms and the park at dawn, the beach (and its aquarium substitute) was one of Ashelia’s favorite safe havens.
The aquarium was also a place of quietude in its own right. Like the energy in tai chi movements, the casual flow of ocean currents worked to soothe most visitors to the aquarium. Most. Positive emotions abounded on every occasion, but today Ashelia could hardly keep from fidgeting. An overwhelming urgency to do something to relieve the energy coursed through her veins, and she felt almost nauseated by its presence.
Just as she moved to find a place to sit, however, a hand spun her around towards the octopus tank. The contact sent her reeling, far too close to her wings even when they were guarded by bandages. She though she might faint. Fighting the swarm of emotions, Ashelia swallowed hard and shut her eyes. When she could finally open them, she found herself kneeling on the floor, legs splayed behind her while her arm was in the grasp of a woman not much younger than herself standing over her.
“Uhm,” she gasped, following the bluenette’s free hand to the tank, “Y-yes, I suppose it was rather…inspiring. I-I’m sorry, but…who are you…?”

The cephalopod’s influence had extended its tentacles of inspiration to the blonde as well. She loved the octopus too!!! A gasp of awe and WONDER escaped from the woman’s lips as she gazed upon the beauty and majesty that was the octopus. In fact, the weight of her shock had collapsed her onto knees as well. The effect this exhibit had on people was not to be underestimated.
Senic crouched down and leaned forward until she could feel her breath on her face. “I am so glad you feel that way,” she whispered with a slow but solemn nod. Extended her arms out, she lifted her newfound friend—yes, they were FRIENDS now—back up to her feet in a swift motion. However, their bond had yet to fully evolve into something magical until each of them acquired one important thing: their names!!
“I’m also Senic!” came her cheery introduction. “Like when you open a can of soda and everything goes FIZZZ and SHHH after you shake it, y’know??” Okay, that last bit was completely unrelated, but she just had the urge to share. She had always wanted to tell someone about this revelation of hers, but most people ran away every time she wanted to spread her knowledge (and her hugs). But not this time!
The blunette returned to her original post by the tank, with her face and hands pressed against the glass in her mesmerized state. “Do you like swimming?” she suddenly asked, whipping her head around to make eye contact with the stranger-turned-pal. There must be a reason for this afternoon visit to the aquarium! And since aquariums held water, this woman must love to swim! What better way to bond with someone than to open up about your hobbies and interests.

Oh, good heavens. Ashelia was going to have a heart attack. Not only was the girl’s exceedingly strong emotional output sending her reeling, she had no sense of any personal boundaries—and Ashelia clung to those like they were her life support. In a motion not unlike a flinch, she shut her eyes and shrank back just a centimeter, only to be yanked back to her feet. The world around her spun in dizzying swirls of blues and greens and greys. She thought she was going to be sick.
“P-please don’t move so quickly.”
Being let go was a relief too great to express. A relieved sigh deflated the blonde’s shoulders, though she kept it quiet so as not to hurt the other girl’s feelings. Hugging her arms to herself to prevent another impromptu grabbing, Ashelia regarded Senic with a mixture of curiosity and unease. Her posture bespoke that of a skittish animal, and she shifted uncertainly on her feet. Almost involuntarily, she took a step sideways from the girl, but she could not bring herself to walk away.
Just breathe, Ashe. Jusqu’ici, tout va bien.
“Jusqu’ici, tout va bien,” she whispered to herself, lifting her head up just in time to smile as the other girl whipped around again. “Ah, swimming? Oui, I like swimming.”
Breathe in, breathe out. Cent, cent; quatre-vignt-dix-neuf , quatre-vignt-dix-neuf; and so on backwards from one hundred until the trembling in her limbs stopped. Though she could not escape the headache or the pounding in her heart, Ashelia could do her best not to dissolve into a full on anxiety attack in the middle of this crowd. That just wouldn’t do, and Leon was at work today, so she had no one to come pick her up anyway. Swallowing, she managed another weak smile.
“It’s nice to meet you, Senic. My name is Ashelia. You seem to be very excited; do you like this place?”

The blunette let out a gasp. Her new best pal loved octopi and swimming?! This. Was. AMAZING. Fortune was certainly smiling down on her as she clapped her hands together in glee. For such a hastily established friendship, they already had so much in common. At this rate, others would simply mistake them as being one person!
But wait, did Senic even like swimming? This thought, unlike the rest, had lodged itself in her mind as the blonde preoccupied herself with strange mutterings. She, like herself, was probably celebrating this unexpected yet fruitful turn of events. However, the student simply could not shift her focus onto anything else besides the issue of her aquatic preferences. If Ashelia liked to swim, then she ought to as well, but her ability to recall such facts was reliably unreliable.
She turned her head to gaze into the tank. The water looked so exciting. A sense of longing overwhelmed her senses. The blonde’s inquiry was heard but not addressed, for immediately afterward, Senic was no longer pressed against the glass in wonder. No, this time, she was on the opposite side, staring at Ashelia from inside the exhibit.
HIII! was what she would have screamed had her oxygen supply not been replaced with something less mammal-friendly. She stood there inside the tank, waving frantically like a child caught on television. Teleporting sure came in handy. Her expression showed not a hint of worry as bubbles escaped from her nose and mouth. Though her body tried to rise to the surface, she withstood its buoyant tendencies by pressing against the glass with all her might.
This is the best!!! she would have said. Alas, her voice was swallowed by the surrounding water.
The world was a blur from her perspective. Her eyes were not made for underwater sight, and her lungs were certainly not built for this sort of environment either. A strange phenomenon occurred: the longer she stood, the more difficult it was to breathe. She tilted her head in confusion as air bubbles drifted upward. How long did this usually last again?

As Senic disappeared, Ashelia blinked and held her breath, not daring to let it out for fear that—yes. There she was again. But was she…behind the glass? Well. That might have been an answer. Not a helpful one, really, but an answer nonetheless.
Did she…teleport? Is she a student?
Truthfully, Ashelia wanted nothing more than to walk away. Not five minutes into this encounter and she was going to need a full night in total meditation or in Leon’s arms to recuperate. The girl seemed so much like a lost child, though, the angel didn’t know if she would be okay by herself. As if to prove her point, she seemed to be drowning; pink cheeks puffed to their firmest, a blueish tint to the lips. Decidedly not good.
“Senic!” This was the tone usually reserved for teaching sessions and unruly students. “Get out of there this instant!”
Surely, if she got herself in, she could get herself out? In the case that she couldn’t, Ashelia’s eyes were already scanning the area for a way to rescue the girl, and following that, towels to dry her off with. It wouldn’t be too long before security arrived, and as much respect as Ashelia had for them, if they were to get involve, her health would only suffer worse.

Wow, this holding-your-breath thing was getting tougher by the second. Fewer bubbles swirled around her as her lungs depleted their air supply, but how could she quit when she just got started? But the tightening of her chest reminded her that her underwater adventure was over. She didn’t even get the chance to pet the octopus.
As soon as her face matched her hair color, the blunette decided it was time to stop drowning. Plus, her new friend looked like she wanted to say something to her! Flashing her an exuberant yet strained grin, she felt herself pop back into the realm of air-breathers. Water splashed against the aquarium floor as a sopping wet Senic returned to her spot beside the Frenchwoman.
“Did you see me swim???” Well, in actuality, standing at the bottom of a tank didn’t exactly qualify as “swimming,” but boy, was it a blast! Everything was blurry and muffled and downright freezing! Why she was the only one to discover this, she’ll never know.
Her clothes hung heavily with the added weight of water, and the air-conditioned building did nothing to help her shivering. She wrapped her arms around herself to fend off the cold. Gosh, aquariums felt like giant refrigerators! “I think I need blankets,” came her shaky voice.

Cold saltwater splashed up against her feet, and not for the first time, Ashelia found herself shivering because of this girl’s actions. Didn’t she know how other people felt, even just a tiny bit, about what she did? Couldn’t she see how distressing her actions were? For the time being, the empath was forced to swallow any reprimands. She gave a weary nod to the question and gently took Senic’s hand.
“This way. You should probably steer clear of the tanks anyway, lest security come looking for you,” she said, beginning to lead the girl over to the entrance to one of the aquarium stadiums.
Towels and ponchos piled up neatly by the door where Ashelia let Senic’s hand drop in favor of picking up one of their bedfellows. Liberally applying terrycloth warmth to the girl’s head and shoulders, she led her into a kneeling position like a child and hoped that would keep her from running off anymore. Her cold-shocked muscles and potentially “bent” veins would appreciate the care, anyway.
“Senic, you must be more careful…You could have gotten yourself hurt, or scared someone. Please think before you act.”
A sigh escaped the blonde, and she knew she should leave, but she stayed, ruffling towels through blue hair and pressing them into soaked clothes like sponges that might soak up the crazy, too. She’d never admit it, but Senic scared her for more than one reason. The girl really was like a child…and if Ashelia couldn’t handle a grown woman acting like a child, could she ever handle the volatile nature of a real one? It was an anxiety that had gnawed at her mind for far too long. She wanted children, some day…but what if she couldn’t have them?
