It was growing late into the night, and it was during these hours that Vireximus University was unusually quiet. Not silent – that would be asking too much. But as Hadley slowly made her way to her dorm room within Sanford Hall, she could actually hear the soft thud of her converses as she took one stair at a time, carrying her to the fourth and final floor of the building. She could hear the steady, soft, inhale and exhale of her breath, instead of a constant and unintelligent drone of conversation, music, movement and general noise. These hours brought mixed feelings to the nineteen-year-old.
It was nice to be removed from the lively chaos of the university – not that Hadley begrudged them entirely for their behaviour. After all, the human population of power-gifted beings was so insignificant that many often went throughout their lives without connection to another gifted person until now. But it also reminded Hadley just how alone she actually was. Unlike those around her, Hadley had no intention of becoming a “hero”, and she wasn’t entirely there to learn how to better control her abilities so as to blend in with the rest of the functioning world. It was a self-imposed sense of isolation. But isolation was still isolation. And Hadley was still adjusting to having no-one that she could rely on but herself.
Her body ached from another club meeting. Parkour had seemed like a useful skill to Hadley, who had always been reasonably fit and active throughout her childhood and adolescence. And though she enjoyed it by God could it be brutalizing, particularly when, unlike other club members, Hadley’s power was in no-way physically enhancing.
Intending to collapse on her bed and sleep the next few hours away until her body stopped feelings as if it were being dragged down by invisible weights, Hadley made it to her dorm room’s door and began to rummage through her backpack, searching for her keys. Teeth chewed lightly upon her lower lip, irritated. This was not what Hadley needed at this point. It would have been a simply manner to draw her room key by memory and use that instead. But that would mean an early-morning visit to administration in the morning. And they had already warned Hadley last time that they would stop issuing her keys in the future if she didn’t learn to stop losing them.

Bianca had gotten her floors mixed up again. She was a senior and you'd think by now she'd have remembered where her room was, but Bianca was, well, not the brightest crayon in the box and she usually always had a hard time finding places. Her room, sadly, was one of those places. After prancing up and down the stairs of Sanford Hall she finally came to the fourth floor for the third time, key in hand.
"I know I'm here...Was it 401 or 404? All of these fours are confusing..." she muttered, walking along while staring at the key as if it would give her some sort of clue. But she wasn't paying attention to where she was going and she accidentally bumped into someone in the hall. "Oof! Sorry about that!" Bianca exclaimed, moving to grab the key from the floor.
But when she looked up her smile faltered slightly. She'd seen this girl...but couldn't remember her name. And Bianca was all about making friends wherever she went. "Oh, hello! I don't think we've met! Which is not okay because we're apparently living right next to one another! So hi, I'm Bianca Weatherby!" At this she stuck out her hand to shake the others.
"What's your name?" LAIKA OF GS!

Wordlessly, Hadley moved the few items that she had stored around within her old backpack, hoping that her fingers would brush the cool familiar surface of her keys, or that her ears would pick up their familiar jingled movement. Every second that passed by, unfruitful, upped the profanity that Hadley was spurting in equal bouts of frustration and irritation within her head.
Ordinarily, at this point, Hadley would have swallowed her pride and proceeded to pound loudly on the wooden door, calling out to her room-mate that she’d misplaced her keys again, and if she could open up. But Hadley already knew that Ava wasn’t there. She’d mentioned that she’d be doing … something or another. And that she’d be back later than she normally would have. And, God, Hadley didn’t want to be left sitting, in the middle of the hallway, waiting for Ava to arrive. Forget the embarrassment; Hadley seriously doubted that she possessed that sort of patience.
”This is so fuckin’ ridiculous …” Hadley had just muttered to herself, glowering down into the contents of her backpack, when something firm collided with her left shoulder, jostling her unexpectedly and causing her to nearly lose her balance. ”Hey!” the blonde protested, choosing to drop her backpack and to throw an arm out, hand firmly holding onto the wall beside her dorm room’s door, rather than connecting with the floor. A quick apology from the guilty party soothed Hadley’s temper. ”That’s … that’s okay,” she replied, cautiously, as she bent to pick up her bag, thankful that none of its contents had spilled out across the ground.
As she did so, Hadley turned her head to better see who had walked into her. Her blue eyes meeting the other girl’s darker set and, though the other girl smiled apologetically back at her, Hadley couldn’t help but to frown, puzzled. Something about her seemed awfully familiar. Like searching for a word, which danced on the tip of your tongue, just out of reach.
And then she said her name.
That name that had realization flooding over Hadley with the force and impact of a sucker-punch. A sour taste that coated the inside of Hadley’s mouth like bile, sickening her.
It was all that Hadley could do but to stare, in a dumb stupor, at the delicate hand that was offered to her. Her mind reasoning that she must have misheard, whilst all the while knowing with an unwanted certainty that she hadn’t. After all, circumstances like this didn’t actually happen. They were concocted for drama’s sake in cheesy predictable movies. So when had Hadley’s life suddenly transformed into some shitty prime-time drama?
Oh, right. When the police escorted her to the coroner’s office, to identify her Daddy’s body.
”H … Hadley …” she finally croaked. Her voice raw and uncertain. All the while continuing to stare at Bianca Weatherby’s hand like she had no idea what it actually was. ”Hadley Monroe.”

The girl seemed to be okay with her running into her, and Bianca let out a sigh of relief. She was really tired of being yelled at for being so clumsy. But she just couldn't help it! Sometimes the air just caught her feet the wrong way or she'd start thinking about things like 'how did I get floors mixed up again?' and well, things happened.
Hadley Monroe. Did that name seem familiar? Bianca blinked as the girl struggled to get her name out, as if she suddenly couldn't breathe. Had something caught her off guard? "Hey, are you okay? Are you sick? I'm a volunteer at the wellness center so I can see if you've got a fever or something?"
Well no, she probably shouldn't. Last time she'd helped someone like that he started to float in midair. And she really didn't want to repeat that episode. So why was she just sitting outside of her dorm room? Did she misplace her keys? At this Bianca smiled, rummaging through her purse to pull out a keyring.
She then pulled one key in particular and winked to Hadley. "Don't tell anyone, but I swiped the master key from the janitor like two years ago because I kept getting lost or losing my own key." LAIKA OF GS!

Hadley was so stupid. She’d allowed herself to get complacent, to believe without any doubt that she’d succeeded in leaving the majority of her past behind her – what she had to leave in order to get the start that was necessary for her to achieve her promise. The promise that she had made both to herself, and to her Daddy. It didn’t matter that he couldn’t hear her heartbroken words. A promise was a promise. And now reality was kicking her in the gut, again, for the price of her naivety.
It was a bad situation. Nothing good came from the Weatherby family. Hadley could testify to that from her last encounter with them. There was no doubt in Hadley’s mind that this Bianca would act with the same arrogant righteous attitude as her parents had displayed to Hadley. She’d expose Hadley for what she was: a fraud. And how could Hadley explain her actions then? How could she justify her intent to find, torture and eventually kill a handful of men to such a righteous institution?
It was the fear of exposure that held Hadley’s tongue as Bianca continued to chatter. But the fear did not freeze Hadley’s thoughts, which scrambled in a frightened frenzy, attempting to think of a means to escape her situation whilst working out Bianca’s intentions simultaneously. And miserably failing.
Blue eyes could only watch the other girl. But it was only when Bianca held out a key in front of Hadley, following the gesture with a wink, that the sickening fear inside of the blonde began to shift into irritation. Irritation that would quickly become rage. After all, it went without question inside of Hadley’s head that the Weatherby family had their own part to play in Hadley’s current situation. Was it not true that those who made the choice of doing nothing and acting the role of an observer shared just as much guilt as the perpetrator? Hadley thought so, and just watching Bianca act so friendly towards her sickened Hadley.
”What do you want?” the icy edge of Hadley’s words matched the glacial depths of her blue-eyed gaze, glaring down at Bianca in clear contempt. She made no gesture towards the master key, despite how it would fix Hadley’s dilemma of being locked out of her room – that was so painfully inconsiderate compared to what now faced her.

Bianca wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box, and for a moment she only watched the girl glare at her with a dumb smile on her face. She held out the key to Hadley, but the girl continued to stare, and eventually Bianca frowned and pulled the key back to her chest with a confused stare in return.
Had she done something wrong? Her cat ears flattened, showing her distress over the situation. But things only got worse when she spoke; that angry hiss of a voice coming from her mouth as if Bianca had just tried to stab her or something. Why was she being so mean? Her cat ears flattened all the way to her head before she replied.
"What do you mean? I just want to help you...I always lose my keys and I think you did too so I want to help you get back into your room cause it's late! Right? Or did I do something wrong?" Bianca was grasping at straws, trying to right whatever wrong she'd done to Hadley. "I'm sorry if I came off as rude! I didn't mean to upset you!" LAIKA OF GS!

Why was she acting stupid? Yes, acting. Hadley didn’t buy the hurt tone in Bianca’s voice or the way that those freakish feline ears of hers lowered themselves closer to her skull, like some pet preparing to be struck by their aggravated human. None of it softened the anger that was rushing, scalding, through her veins like liquid fire. If anything, Bianca was only upsetting Hadley all the more.
Glossed lips twisted into a thin sneering line, a short sound of disbelief echoed from Hadley’s unforgiving mouth. Clearly stating just how unimpressed she was. ”Right. Of course you didn’t.”
Bianca was trying to manipulate her, of that Hadley felt certain of. She’d widened her eyes and play dumb, forcing Hadley to go along with her act else she’d start the sort of scene that would lead to unwanted questions. Questions that would force attention upon Hadley. Attention that Hadley really didn’t need if she was to play the role that she had created for herself. And once she had Hadley reluctantly dancing to her tune, Bianca would gradually start wanting things from Hadley. Which Hadley would have to deliver else risk having Bianca expose her. It was a simplistic plan, so obvious in Bianca’s behaviour. And it infuriated Hadley.
”I don’t really like playing games,” Hadley kept her voice low, cautious of the direction of where this conversation could steer towards and, worse, who could possible overhear them. But she made no effort to conceal the hostility in her voice, her anger making her reckless. ”And I can see through this … act, of yours. So let’s skip the bullshit and you can just tell me what it is that you want from me.” It hurt to say those words. To make it clear that though doing so would disgust Hadley to her very core, she’d likely do whatever Bianca wanted, if it meant that she wouldn’t start speaking of the connection between her family and Hadley’s.

She sounded so angry. Bianca could only stare at Hadley with wide eyes as she accused her of things she wasn't even aware of. Why did this girl have such hatred toward her when she'd done nothing wrong? It was really hurtful, especially when she asked what Bianca wanted from her.
So her sad expression turned into one of anger herself, because she didn't like being attacked for no reason. Bianca moved her hands to her hips, ears perking back up as she began to fight back. "Hey! Don't talk to me like that!" she hissed, eyes narrowing toward Hadley. How dare she be so mean without any reason behind it?
"I don't like you! You're mean to me and I don't know why! All I did was offer you a stupid key and now you're asking what I want? I just wanted to help you get into your room but now you can forget about it! Meanie!" And without warning Bianca stuck her tongue out at Hadley and turned to go back to her room. But she paused, key sticking out as she thought.
Then before Hadley could say anything, Bianca moved her aside and unlocked her door with the key. "...Whatever!" And then she went into her room, slamming the door behind her. LAIKA OF GS!
