Who knows how long she had been sitting there. An hour? Two? Probably closer to four, really. She had chosen one of the longest tables in the entire library, one that was meant to seat a whole fleet of students, but instead she reserved entirely for herself. Evie sat toward the middle with a few books open in front of her, but was flanked by entire stacks of thick, hardcover books. She turned the last page of one she was reading, then closed it with a barely audible snap and slid it to one side.
Like an assembly line, she replaced the finished book with another from the stacks on her left.
Evie loved the library. Everyone was too busy panicking about their test tomorrow than to come up and try to talk to her. In the library, you were left to your own devices. The only voice was your own in your head. She liked the smell of crisp, aged paper. She adored how the light filtered through the bookshelves and cast a warm yellow color. The sound of turning pages was true music to Evie.
Attending the university after an entire life of being homeschooled was a huge change. Everything felt so foreign, except this library - it reminded her of her parents' private study back home. Evie felt comfortable here... At peace.

Apparently the library was crowded. He wouldn't have come in here if he knew that much. But Aries was cursed with the inability to focus on anything so he figured that since he desperately needed to get some work done (after being chewed out by his dad over the phone last night upon mentioning that he failed a quiz), the library would be the place to go.
He wasn't really one for studying. Or doing homework. Or really putting effort forward in anything but his hobbies, and that short list consisted of hooking up with girls, playing video games and swimming. But he couldn't afford to lose the financial backing he was getting from his parents. While he had to take out a few loans, his parents were helping pay for his schooling and he didn't want to leave New York just yet. Besides, if he came home as a failure, his life would be hell.
So he went to the library. Against his will. Kind of.
But since it was loaded with people, he traipsed around for a while, trying to find somewhere to sit. Getting mad and a little disgruntled he moved up floor by floor until he came across what seemed to be an empty table, nestled in between a few bookshelves. It seemed to be the perfect oasis he had been looking for but...dammit.
Rounding the corner of a bookshelf he noticed a dark-haired girl sitting smack in the middle of the long table, her supplies spread out around her. While normally he wouldn't do something like this, he was sick and tired of looking around and if he didn't get a few hours of studying in, he was going to miss dinner and that would piss him off even more.
"Can I sit here?" he grumbled to the girl at the table, setting his backpack down preemptively on one of the chairs towards the right end of the table, planning on sitting down whether she said yes or no.

Just like that, the peace was broken by a human voice. Talking ranked high on the list of sounds that Evie disliked, along with laughing, singing, crying, and many others associated almost exclusively with homo sapiens. Wonder why.
Evie looked up from her books and at Aries. He looked a bit disgruntled, perhaps even annoyed. Had he been looking for an empty table for awhile? Being a solitary creature, Evie could relate to the plight of trying to find a place that was both quiet and also devoid of company. Perhaps that's what caused her to nod her head curtly.
"Yes," she replied, ducking her head almost immediately to return to her current book. "As long as you do not touch anything." If he somehow messed up her assembly line of books there would be blood to pay. In fact, having that short conversation put her several pages behind schedule, so although he did not know it, Aries should feel pretty grateful that Evie was not chewing his ear off - not literally of course.
Evie actually recognized Aries, which was a bit of a surprise because she didn't spend much time attempting to learn faces. She had most certainly never seen him in the library. He didn't appear to be the type that hits the books. Perhaps in a hallway, or almost definitely in the cafeteria.
"I'm Evie," she murmured, her voice nearly cancelled out by the crisp sound of her turning a page.

Thankfully she said yes, though Aries wouldn't have cared much either way. He was sick and tired of lugging his backpack around and he needed a place just to sit for a while to work on some assignments. Of course, he really didn't want to so he wasn't going to try very hard, but a little effort was better than no effort, right? That's what his dad had said after all. Baby steps.
Plopping down on a chair next to his backpack he pulled out a few books and his laptop, glancing at the blue-haired girl's system of looking through her books and putting them to the side before taking one from the pile on her opposite side. What was she, a robot or something? Snerking a bit to himself, he opened the lid of his laptop and loaded up his word processor.
He was just about to crack open a book to not-really-scan the contents when he heard a slight murmuring from the girl. Glancing up through his slight fringe that fell in his face, he raised an eyebrow. Even though she was unknown to him, something about her seemed familiar. Maybe he saw her at a party or something.
"That's nice," he responded when she introduced herself. "But I didn't ask."
It might have been a bit harsh, but Aries wasn't here to make friends. He had his friends and this girl definitely didn't fit the profile.
