[attr="class","staffbod"]New York City is a wonderful, expansive and colorful city full of diversity and life! However, correctly portraying the city as well as New Yorkers can be difficult if you're not from the area. Please read through this short guide to learn about the city and the people that hail from there.
1. New York City is very low on space. If your character is from the heart of NYC, he or she probably lived in an apartment, condo or penthouse. While there are townhouses in the city they are absurdly pricely.
2. There are no Walmarts in the city. There are also quite a few malls, the ones judged the best being Queens Center Mall located in Queens.
3. Most people do not take cabs. Subway is the preferred mode of transport in the city, as they are quicker and less expensive than cabs. To ride the subway, you must purchase a Metro Card. On the same note, most New Yorkers don't drive cars in the city. Public transport is much easier.
4. No matter how you slice it, everything in NYC is going to be a bit more expensive than other areas.
5. If you're looking for a "hipster hangout," Williamsburg is where you want to go.
6. Even though it seems like a super dangerous place on TV, NYC isn't as bad as it looks. Muggings, for example, aren't very common, and the Bronx isn't extremely dangerous all over.
7. You don't have to be rich to live in Manhattan. There are various neighborhoods in each borough, and some are poorer than others. For each rich neighborhood, there is a poor one right next door. For example, The Upper East Side is a rich neighborhood and East Harlem is a poor neighborhood, and they're located close together in Manhattan.
8. Also, since it IS a city, NYC is very loud all the time. If you live in the heart of the city, you will hear sirens, people and traffic all the time.
9. New Yorkers aren't as gruff as the media makes them seem. They are willing to help people out on the street if they're lost and they don't constantly swear.
10. Vendor hotdogs aren't a staple food, especially to New Yorkers.
11. Flushing is like a smaller Manhattan, but located in the borough of Queens.
12. Cops are strict. Teens aren't going to be getting fake IDs and sneaking into clubs like they show you in Gossip Girl.
13. There are a lot of bums in the city, no matter where you go. Despite this, it is impossible for anyone to starve in the city as there are countless soup kitchens and churches that open their doors to the hungry.
